CARLQUIST, S., 1991. Leaf anatomy of Bruniaceae: ecological, systematic and phylogenetic aspects. Quantitative and qualitative data are given for 60 species of the 12 genera of Bruniaceae; most data are based on liquid-preserved material. Leaves of Bruniaceae are basically linear (broader forms are probably derived) with an apicula that contains phellogen activity. Most bruniaceous leaves have some degree of isolateral construction, with transition to normal bifacial construction in a few species, but more commonly transition to 'inverse' bifacial structure (stomata on adaxial face, palisade on abaxial face). The latter type is correlated with the tendency for leaves to be appressed to stems. Tannins and very likely other dark-staining materials are very characteristic of mesophyll cells. Six genera have a large strand of fibres on the midvein and rhomboidal crystals in bundle sheath cells. The other six genera have few or no fibres on veins and have druses in mesophyll cells (but not in bundle sheath cells). These distinctions may relate to intrafamilial taxonomy, but they also support the primitive position usually accorded to Audouinia, Thamnea and Tittmannia. A key to genera based on leaf antomy is offered. Details of epidermal cell shape, cuticular relief and trichome form and structure based on scanning electron microscopy are given. Leaf anatomy, combined with other features, favours a relationship between Bruniaceae and Grubbiaceae in particular and in broader contexts allies Bruniaceae to rosalean and possibly hamamelidalean families.  相似文献

Wood and stem anatomy is studied for seven species of six genera (root anatomy also reported for one species) of Amaranthaceae s.s. Quantitative data on vessels correlate closely with relative xeromorphy of respective species, agreeing with values reported for dicotyledons without successive cambia in comparable habitats. Libriform fibre abundance increases and vessel diameter decreases as stems and roots of the annual Amaranthus caudatus mature. Long, thick-walled fibres in Bosea yervamora may be related to the upright nature of elongate semi-climbing stems. Non-bordered or minutely bordered perforation plates characterize Amaranthaceae, as they do most other Caryophyllales. Amaranthaceae have idioblastic cells containing druses, rhomboidal crystals or crystal sand: these forms intergrade and seem closely related. Rays are present in secondary xylem of the Amaranthaceae studied. Cells intermediate between ray cells and libriform fibres occur in Charpentiera elliptica . Degrees of diversity in rays and reports of raylessness in Amaranthaceae induce discussion of definition and identification of rays in dicotyledons; some sources recognize both rays and radial plates of conjunctive tissue in Amaranthaceae. The action of successive cambia is described: lateral meristem periclinal divisions produce secondary cortex externally, conjunctive tissue internally and yield vascular cambia as well. Vascular cambia produce secondary phloem and secondary xylem, in both ray and fascicular zones, as in a dicotyledon with a single cambium. Five evergreen subtropical tree species growing under identical environmental conditions were investigated to establish which hydraulic properties are genotypically rigid and which show phenotypic plasticity. Maximum xylem-specific conductivity ( k s) correlated well with the anatomical characteristics (conduit diameter and density) for the four angiosperms Tecomaria capensis , Trichilia dregeana , Cinnamomum camphora and Barringtonia racemosa ; the anatomy of the gymnosperm Podocarpus latifolius was not assessed. Huber values (functional xylem cross-sectional area : leaf area) varied inversely with k s among species. Maximum leaf-specific conductivity was similar in the five unrelated species. Vulnerability of xylem to cavitation differed between species, as did the relationship between transpiration and water potential. Models of these parameters and isolated midday readings confirm that these trees operate at similar maximum leaf-specific conductivity ( k l) values. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that conductivity characteristics ( k l, k s) are influenced by environment, whereas vulnerability to cavitation is genetically determined.  相似文献

Fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas, raised from eggs in the laboratory, were experimentally infected with oocysts of Eimeria iroquoina from either P. promelas or the common shiner, Notropis cornutus. Within intestinal epithelial cells, trophozoites thought to be derived from the sporozoites contained a prominent electron-dense refractile body. Merozoites dedifferentiated into trophic forms by losing components of their apical complex and pellicle. The inner membrane components of the pellicle appeared discontinuous, and the micronemes became enclosed within vacuoles. Prior to merozoite formation, multinucleate meronts were limited by a single membrane. Golgi complexes were associated with the nuclei of this stage. Merozoites were formed by ectomerogony in one generation and by endomerogony in the final generation. In both forms of merogony the final nuclear division was coupled with the onset of differentiation of the merozoites and featured eccentric mitotic spindles associated with centrocones located within the nuclear envelope and with the precursors of the apical complex. A Golgi complex was closely associated with the nucleus and apical tip of the forming merozoite. Unlike other Eimeria species, the complete pellicle of the merozoites of the final asexual generation of E. iroquoina was formed within the cytoplasm of the meront, without association with the limiting membrane, thus, all pellicular components are synthesized de novo. The inner membranes of the pellicle initially appeared as longitudinal strips, each of which was associated with a pair of the 22–24 subpellicular microtubules. Mature meronts of the final asexual generation averaged 9 μm in diameter and produced 13–16 merozoites. With the exception of the internal completion of the pellicle of the final generation merozoites, the basic processes of merogony in fish Eimeria species are similar to those recorded in terrestrial hosts.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The structural changes in macro and microgametocytes of Parahaemoproteus velans following removal of infected blood from the avian host were studied in the light and electron microscope. Gametocytes of both sexes round up and soon escape from their host cells. Shortly thereafter they assume a dumbbell shape. The microgametocyte undergoes exflagellation forming 8 slender microgametes. During fertilization the entire microgamete appears to enter the female. The most striking ultrastructural change in the formation of the macrogamete is the condensation and enclosure by a membrane of abundant amophorus dense material seen in the cytoplasm of the immature gametocyte. Maturation of the microgametocyte begins prior to its escape from the host cell. Axonemes are present in the cytoplasm and nuclear reorganization occurs while the parasite is intracellular. Bundles of microtubules associated with condensed chromatin are found in the peripheral cytoplasm of maturing forms and apparently participate in the formation of small compact microgamete nuclei. Each of these filiform structures consists of a dense, centrally located nucleus and a single axoneme lying in flocculent cytoplasm. The nucleus and axoneme of the microgamete are seen free in the cytoplasm of a fertilized macrogamete.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative data are presented for 11 collections of six species. The wide range of character states for the species is presented in the form of a key to emphasize their potential systematic correlations. Distinctive among these are phcllem characteristics. Fibre-tracheids are newly reported for lianoid Gnetum species. Cells previously thought to be like companion cells in secondary phloem are shown to be uniseriate rays, counterparts to uniseriate xylem rays. Laticifers are abundant in most of the species, and are newly described for secondary tissues of Gnetum. Presence of tyloses in laticifers of two species is apparently a new report for vascular plants. Tori are present in two New World Gnetum species, adding to the report in African species. Perforation plates are simple except near or in primary xylem, where they are simple or foraminate. Torus presence and foraminate perforation plate presence are features more reminiscent of Ephedra and other gymnosperms than of angiosperms. The bark of Gnetum is also very similar to that of Ephedra.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative data are presented for seven collections representing two varieties (unlike in habit) of Gnetum gnemon. Tracheids are present, but abundant and intermixed with them are septate fibre-tracheids rich in starch. Axial parenchyma has been reported only once previously for the species. Axial parenchyma is in strands of 4–10 cells, is rich in starch, is primarily vasicentric (paratracheal) in distribution, less commonly diffuse. About equally common are simple and compound perforation plates; the latter are composed of from two to about ten bordered foraminate perforations, the shape of which may be altered by crowding or coalescence, but is clearly still foraminate. Lateral walls of vessels bear pits that are vestured around pit cavities, not facing the pit membrane. Rays are composed mostly of procumbent cells; the tangential walls bear bordered pits. Crystals, present in ray cells and (rarely) axial parenchyma vary widely in size. Crystalliferous sclereids with layered walls, starch-rich parenchyma, and gelatinous secondary phloem fibres are the main components of bark. Early stages in origin of successive vascular cambia in bark are newly described. When representative conditions are derived from study of large numbers of slides, the classical view that Gnetum vessels are unlike those of angiosperms is supported. Features of Gnetum gnemon wood are discussed in the light of ecology and conductive physiology.  相似文献

Wood samples of stems, lignotubers, and roots of the majority of species of Penaeaceae were analyzed with respect to qualitative and quantitative features. Virtually no data have hitherto been presented on xylem features of this family, restricted to Cape Province, South Africa. Presence of vestured pits in vessels, septate crystalliferous parenchyma in wood, intraxylary phloem, predominantly erect ray cells in the typically narrow, multiseriate rays and in the uniseriate rays, and amorphous deposits in ray cells place Penaeaceae securely in Myrtales and help to define that order. By comparison of ecological preferences of the species, as observed during field work, with quantitative analysis of conductive tissue, close correspondence of the wood structure to habit and habitat is demonstrated.  相似文献
